Assessment: We will be doing a formal assessment of the writing program in the next year. We’ll collect data from ENGL 1106 in Spring 2026 and from ENGL 1105 in Fall 2026. I’ll share more information soon about the data collection process for 1106 in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out for this information.
Brown Bags: Professional development has taken different forms over the years, and we always want to make them as useful as possible. We have therefore canceled the Brown Bag that was originally scheduled for November 3rd and will instead send out a survey in late November that assesses what faculty members are looking for in these events. Like we did with the previous survey the UWP sent out a few years ago, participants will be entered into a random drawing of $50 for completing the survey.
Everyone’s an Author: Everyone’s an Author has a new edition, with the new material primarily being focused on generative AI in the writing classroom. The UWP committee decided that because faculty members and GTAs are still getting used to the current edition of the textbook that we will not adopt the new edition and will continue to use the current version for one more year. I will continue to batch order the textbook for the program, so you do not need to individually order the textbook for your students.
Teaching Portfolios: We are in need of updated 1106 projects for Hokieswrite.com. Because of this, we want to send out a call for 1106 teaching portfolios. Therefore, if you have materials from this semester that you would like to submit, please hold on to them. Because most of you will teach 1106 in the spring, I’ll send out more details about how to submit your materials next semester, but I wanted you to be aware of it now. If your portfolio is selected to be showcased on Hokieswrite.com, you will receive $400.
